"So far, so good," Eva said, thinking outloud. Eva and Pervis had never approved of Jasper’s character since they’d first met him. Pervis had made arrangements through Henry to fully inform Jasper's company commander of his unsavory behavior towards his family. The nights were becoming more pleasant but all had to be cautious. Eva returned to the porch after cleaning the kitchen.

"Joy, I have something to say to you to as she pulled her to the side."

"What, Granny?"

“I think it's about time you have your Mom’s letter,” she said while reaching into her apron pocket.

Joy gently took the letter from Eva's hand. The girls said goodnight. Eva and Pervis remained on the porch. Eva smiled to herself and Pervis nodded his head and patted his foot keeping time with the tranquilizing melody of TJ’s mysterious harmonica in the distance.

Joy tiptoed into Glenda's room. Even thought Eva had told Joy to read her Mom's letter in privacy, she wanted to share her letter with Glenda who'd never had the opportunity to really know her Aunt Arvis.

"Glenda, somehow I think Mom wouldn't mind if you heard what she's written."

Closing the door to Glenda’s bedroom, the girls huddled together. Joy unfolded the letter and began to read.

…“You must study hard and learn as much as you can, but most importantly, learn to listen well to the two wisest people I've ever known…Eva and Pervis Tazell…my parents…Joy, you must forgive your Dad.”

Joy sat motionless holding her Mom's letter close to her heart. She hugged her cousin goodnight, went into her own bedroom, placed the letter under her pillow, kissed the tiny black and white photo of her Mom, turned off her light and slipped into a deep peaceful sleep.

Pervis checked all the doors and windows as he'd done for so many nights over the years.

"Do you think TJ will help us with our plans concerning Jasper?"

"Yes, Eva.”

"Lord have mercy on the man," Eva whispered.

The following day, Pervis had finished sharpening the last circular saw and was locking up his workshop when TJ arrived at the yard gate. His heart pounded with nervous anticipation as he watched TJ position Josie in the shade of the magnolia tree. Pervis walked towards TJ with his arm extended to greet the paradoxical visitor once again. TJ returned the gesture.

"Let's have a sit down on the front porch and take a load off, old boy," Pervis suggested.

As the two men walked side by side towards the front porch, Pervis contemplated how he'd begin to tell his friend why he'd asked him to come by the house. Eva was still sleeping which was most unusual for someone who never missed a morning waking up to meet the sun.

"Have a seat, my good man," Pervis said. Then…TJ began to speak.

"Pervis, I'm whatever you or anyone needs me to be. Prayer…is the key to my present involvement with your family…especially Joy.”

Pervis couldn't hold back any longer and said, "TJ, you and I have met before. Remember that night beside that old red clay road? Remember me, Charlie and Luke?"

TJ smiled.
